Susan Stortini creates her own glass beads and designs jewellery. Her hand crafted lamp work beads are prepared with rods of Murano glass, melted in a dual fuel torch, then the molten glass is wound around a mandrel. Once the bead is sufficiently worked in the flame it is placed in a computerized kiln for annealing.
Being inspired by the surrounding world of nature, historical artifacts and mythological archetypes of the past. She finds that glass, with its magical and mystical properties lends itself to mindful and timeless creations of wearable art.
Susan likes to make her beads representational, based on talismanic or mythological themes. However, Images from the Hubble telescope, Nebulas, fractal geometric patterns and the vast images found in space, oceans and weather patterns all are wonderful sources of inspiration.
The amazing array of bright, happy, primary colors found in the palette of the “soda Lime glass” just lend themselves to total fun and creative expression.
Color is such a positive mood lifter that just looking at them is cheerful experience.
Susan has been featured in numerous publications and articles In Canada, United States and Abroad and has had the privilege of learning from some of the finest and most respected Lamp workers.
Having a background in the martial arts she finds a wonderful transferal skill between discipline and art.
